As much fun as we have playing virtual reality games, we can't ignore the unique benefits VR offers the education industry.

"The extra benefits of using VR in a classroom are the students' increased concentration and focus, since once the VR mask is on, all other distractions go away, giving way to full immersion into the virtual experience. This multi-sensory, high impact learning leaves a much deeper imprint in young minds than textbook articles and video lessons." - teachercast.net

“VR is the most engaging and emotionally positive learning method in comparison to textbook learning and video.”

The quote above, from a study conducted by the University of Warwick, adds to the growing list of research that proves virtual reality can have significant positive impacts in the classroom.

According to the research performed at the English university:

  • Positive emotions were rated higher for the group who experienced the VR learning method.
  • VR users performed better than students learning with video.
  • The active interaction with the VR environment helped improve learning.
It makes sense that virtual reality would improve learning, after all, it’s immersive, engaging and experiential all in one. While those may sound like education buzz words, the bottom line is simple: kids think it’s cool and who wouldn’t want to learn about photosynthesis while standing among the ancient redwoods in Muir National Monument among the great redwoods.

Numerous studies (Oklahoma State University – 2011; Pearson Foundation – 2012; Houghton Mifflin Harcourt – 2012; UC Irvine – 2013) have shown that the inclusion of new technology in education increases student performance by providing additional tools teachers can use to engage their students. These tools, such as computers and laptops have all been proven to aid in student learning and subject comprehension. Virtual reality goes one step further by providing an individualistic immersive environment for students that is free of distractions from the outside world.

Virtual reality as a learning tool is not a new concept, though the delivery method has evolved with the emergence of head-mounted displays. Several studies have shown that virtual reality’s immersive learning benefits can have a powerful impact on learning.

One such study, from the University of Maryland study points to virtual reality tools in education offer an improvement over tablet-based or traditional computer-based learning. The study showed that people remember information better and have a higher recall when that info is presented in VR compared to iPads and Chromebooks.

VR vs traditional 2D Video:

  • 8.8% higher average recall in VR
  • 12% higher median recall in VR

Virtual reality provides individual immersive learning perspectives while presenting students with experiences they might not otherwise be able to explore. These experiences can be delivered in the form of a “virtual field trip” – where students are part of a 360-degree landscape by viewing films show with virtual reality cameras – or through immersion within a computer generated environment that takes them to places that are normally unreachable (ex. Outer Space, inside the the Human Body, and ancient or prehistoric times).

We offer field trips both in our location and in classroom to schools in St Albert, Edmonton area, Morinville, Sherwood Park, Strathcona County, Spruce Grove, and Leduc. We also host a variety of team building, Community events and Esports tournaments.

Each field trip consists of 4 components:

-Orientation and tour of our facility:

We will give a brief introduction into what VR is and go over rules and safety instructions. After the orientation, we will split the students into 3 groups and rotate them through all 3 stations.

-Inside Virtual Reality

Students will be able to experience VR first hand in one of our many curriculum-based programs.

-Craft Time

We will guide students through an easy to make craft relevant to VR that they can take home with them.

-Presentation

We will deliver an age appropriate presentation on VR technology and show how the headset and tracking technology works.

At the end of the field trip, the students will have a greater understanding of what virtual reality is and why it is important in today's world. VR is slated to grow from a $7 billion industry to a $70 billion industry in the next 4 years and will be a key part of any future career.

We offer a wide range of educational VR programs suitable for ages 5 and up. We also have access to several of the most advanced and innovative VR education platforms in the world, featuring full curriculum-based experiences in every subject.

Xennial Digital

Xennial Digital or XD Learning is a powerful, secure VR platform with a STEM-based library of educational experiences designed to support, enhance and align to STEM curriculum for K-12 schools.

Victory VR

Victory VR is a world leader in virtual reality educational product development with over 240 unique VR experiences spanning more than 50 different learning units. Their content has won acclaim from HTC at the Viveport Developer Awards, where it was named Best Educational VR software. With educational partners like Carolina Biological and Oxford University, they have been able to develop brand-new educational encounters for VR & AR users across the globe.

A few other programs we commonly use for field trips are:

Tilt Brush

Tilt Brush lets you paint in a 3D space with virtual reality. Your room is your canvas. Your palette is your imagination. Freely move and draw all around the room. You will never look at art the same way again. Students can even save their art as a 360 image that they can view later.

Google Earth VR

See the world like never before! Instantly teleport anywhere in the world. Travel across Canada, fly to the top of Mount Everest or tour downtown London. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

The Body VR

The Body VR: Journey Inside a Cell is an educational virtual reality experience that takes the user into the human body. Travel through the bloodstream and discover how blood cells work to spread oxygen throughout the body. Enter one of the billions of living cells inside our body and learn how the organelles work together to fight deadly viruses.
